Things you should know in order to enjoy Kyoto's art museums

Kyoto Art Center

This is a comprehensive art facility that was established in April, 2000.
As well as exhibitions, it is a space for holding a wide variety of art-related events including chado (tea ceremony), Japanese traditional performing arts, stage performances such as music and drama, and workshops. Many modern art and young artists from all over the world as well as Japan are involved with the Center, and many of its events can be enjoyed even by children.
This building was built in 1931 as an elementary school, and was reincarnated as the Kyoto Art Center after the school closed down. The elementary school remains in spirit in various places such as the gallery and corridor, and the building has a nostalgic feel to it. There is a Japanese‐style room on the 4th floor, which is used for events such as tea parties and traditional performing art workshops.

The Collections
The Center does not have a collection, but artists from various fields frequently use it as a venue for exhibitions and public performances.

Notes
The first floor cafe is located in a room that was formally an elementary school classroom and its unique appearance is popular with visitors. Due to its proximity to central Kyoto, many people only use the Center for the cafe.
Shopping centers such as the Nishiki Food Market, Shinkyogoku and Teramachi-Kyogoku are within walking distance of the Center, so it is a useful place to search for souvenirs.
